Course Information
Description Intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research-based expository and persuasive texts. Emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, visual, and multimedia texts; systematic evaluation, synthesis, and documentation of information sources; and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions. Prerequisites Basic skills competency in reading and writing required. Students whose degree plan requires both English 1301 and 1302 must take these courses in sequence.
Learning Outcomes Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative research processes.
Develop ideas and synthesize primary and secondary sources within focused academic arguments, including
one or more research-based essays.
Analyze, interpret, and evaluate a variety of texts for the ethical and logical uses of evidence.
Write in a style that clearly communicates meaning, builds credibility, and inspires belief or action.
Apply the conventions of style manuals for specific academic disciplines (e.g., APA, CMS, MLA, etc.)
Core Objectives * Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.
* Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.

Outline

The class shall maintain an environment that is conducive to learning without the presence of students or others who disrupt the academic community. Any student who fails to demonstrate collegiate behavior will not be permitted to remain in class and a grade of F may result.
Deliberately disrupting the class will result in failure of the course. Students who make rude, offensive, or threatening remarks to the teacher or other students will fail the course.
Students who are disrespectful to the instructor or other students, who disrupt class, or who refuse to follow instructions will be dismissed from class permanently.

Detailed explanations of assignments, page numbers, due dates of essays, homework etc. given in class. We will be reading and discussing a great deal of literature. Keeping up with the work as assigned is essential in this course.

Attendance Policy Attendance for this course is mandatory.

Submitting work late will result in a reduced grade. Don't do that to yourself-- or to me.
